Volleyball Rules

It’s important to know at least the basic volleyball rules before you hit the court.
To start with, you need two teams with each team made up of six (6) players. The game of volleyball is played indoors on a rectangular court with a volleyball net in the middle dividing the court into 2 sides.

The object of the game is to beat your opponent by getting to the required game points (25) first. There are many different skills, plays and strategies employed in the game to achieve this object.

Quick note: Volleyball is a dynamic and evolving game with new volleyball rules being tried and implemented to improve the game for players and spectators, so its good to stay up to date with them.

There are also strict rules around the type and size of the volleyball ball used in the game. In competition, the ball needs to be spherical, made of leather or synthetic leather with a circumference of about 65 cm, a weighing around 260g and an inside pressure of 0.30–0.325 kg/cm

As statted previously, the volleyball court measures 18 mtrs or 59 feet long and 9 mtrs or 29.5 feet wide, divided equallly in to two 9 m by 9 m halves.

A few other important volleyball rules include:

1. Serving – the ball is hit over the net or “served” to commence play. There are several styles of volleyball serves that can be mastered and implemented.

2. Court Rotation
There are six distinct positions numbered from 1 to 6. The side that wins the serve must rotate clockwise. If a side wins a point from their own serve then no rotation takes place. There are penalties for failing to rotate or being out of rotation (i.e. in the wrong positions)

3. Volleyball skills
Each side is allowed 3 “touches” of the ball before it must be sent over to the opposing side. These three touches must not have any single player make two consecutive touches. If more than 3 touches then the opposing side is awarded the serve or point. For beginner teams, they generally follow the pass, set and hit routine. Meaning, as the ball is served by the opposing side, the receiving team would pass the ball to the setter, where a set is made for the hitters and the hitters would mount their best offensive move. Hopefully resulting in a win.

Now, I know this is brief but I hope this gives you enough information to understand the basics and spark your interest to find out more.
